Dean Winchester is one of the protagonists of the famous long-running American horror TV series, Supernatural. Along with his brother, Sam Winchester, he works on cases as hunter who hunts down ghosts and monsters for saving people. Besides, they also have to deal with the heaven's angel and hell's league, even they succeeded in stopping the apocalypse. Thank you very much. The fictional character is portrayed by Jensen Ackles, was born on 24 January 39 years ago. Celebrating Dean's birthday today, I would like to share what actually we can learn from this character.
1. Family is essential
Family means everything. This is the place where you feel
safe and protected, where you can feel the sincere affections from the people
you love. When you are on your darkest time, they will always be there to give
you a hand whenever you need it. Family is the people who willingly do
everything to keep you alive and happy. It is not only about the people, but
family also about the bond, emotions, and communications. Thus, building and
keeping the good relations with your family is important.
Dean Winchester used to dream to have a normal family.
However, he and his brother had to loose their parents and people they love
constantly because of the works that they have to deal with. Sometimes he
cannot avoid arguments with his brother, and not once or twice Sam left Dean
to calm himself down. Dean cannot see him loosing anymore people who close to
him, and he tries to do everything to keep them unite, even that he has to deal
with the evil. Because he knows that family is everything for him, and he
cannot live without Sammy.
2. Know and accept your
responsibilities
As a human being, we should realize that we have our own
responsibilities. We do responsible to the environment we live in, to people
around us, even to ourselves and our own future. Never neglect your
responsibilities in life and do what you need to do. Sam and Dean’s father almost never had time to spend with
his children because of his job for hunting things.
Dean used to take care of
Sam when he was just a child. Until finally they grew up, Dean always keep his eyes
on his little brother, not only as a brother, but he also tries to be a
father-figure for his Sammy. He would sacrifice everything for Sam, including
his soul to resurrect Sam from death. Besides his family, he also knows that he
has to do the “family business” in saving people. Along with his brothers, he works
on cases to help people’s live who are in danger because of evil entities.
3. When a man cries, it does
not mean that he is weak
There is a term that real man does not cry. However, cry is
a normal act of a human being. Although man is perceived as a strong and tough
figure, man also has emotions and he has the rights to let them all out over
their tears, whether it is sadness, happiness, or even madness. We have to put
it in mind that we do not know what other people are dealing with.
Dean is not living in an apple-pie life. He lost his parents
and the people he loves, he has to look out for his little brother, save people,
and fights with heaven’s angel and hell’s league as well. Sometimes Dean also
had to deal with the stubborn Sammy when he tried to make him understand the
sacrifices he has made for him. And there were times he gave up that he could
not carry his responsibilities anymore. Dean has been carrying to much pain to
burden. When he could not stand it any longer, the tears would fall on his
cheek.
4. There will be time
that you will have to put faith in God and turn down your ego
Sometimes we think that we can do everything that seems
right for us. Each time we think that we can control everything. We put all
efforts to reach what we have been dreaming of. However, things do not always
happen as we expected and we get mad because what we have done are all in vain.
Sometimes we have to stop, take a deep breath, and realize it by heart that
there is a mightier power controlling us as well. Remember that God put His
hands on our life. It is okay to be skeptic, but turn down your ego for a
while. He knows what is right to us.
Dean is introduced as a character that does not have faith
in God. Although he knows that demons are out there, he did not believe that
angels and God exist because he perceived that bad things keep happening to
good people and there was still no miracle. The character develops when Castiel, an angel
of the Lord who resurrects Dean from death, comes to his life. Throughout his
life, Dean experiences a weightier burden on his chest, and he finally prays
for God’s help. Even though in the end he still does not believe a 100% in God,
at least he starts showing a faith. And that is a good sign.
